February Landscaping and Gardening Guide

January 12, 2021Andrew SavinsonGarden Planner

By the end of the month the first flower bulbs will be popping up through the soil, and you may even see a Cornelian Cherry Dogwood or Viburnum ‘Dawn’ coming into bloom.

We are busy here at Creative Landscapes completing designs to be installed as soon as spring breaks.

Get ahead of the rush and set up an appointment now with one of our Landscape Designers, so you can upgrade your landscaping this Spring!

Here are some tips to make your garden its best this year:

Knock heavy snow and ice off of your plants as soon as possible after a storm (use a broom!). Particular attention should be given to Yews, Japanese Hollies, Arborvitae, Leland Cypress and Dogwoods.

Spray evergreens with Deer Repellant to protect from deer. Over spray with ‘Wilt-Proof’ to prevent the Deer Repellant from washing off.

Use traction sand instead of salt to protect plants and walkways during ice/snow removal.

Spray indoor plants with insecticidal soap or water regularly, and feed bi-weekly with a liquid fertilizer.

Use the winter months to put paths in your woods and clear away vines and wild roses. Cover your woodland paths with woodchips.

Sow vegetable and flower seeds indoors, follow instructions on the labels, and grow under lights in a cool location.

Make cuttings from Forsythia and Cherry trees and bring indoors for early ‘forcing’ of blooms. Place in warm water.
