How to have plants in bloom in your early spring garden before everyone else!

Driving around the suburbs you may marvel at the stunning early spring flowers in a neighbour’s yard, and wish you had some on your property.  In fact, you may want to start enjoying the spring a month earlier in March, instead of April, in your garden.

Here are some of the best plants for early color in the landscape, put some of these on your shopping list, or request them in your landscape design for a beautiful early spring in your yard.

The most obvious way to create early spring color is to plant bulbs in the fall. The earliest to bloom include Crocus, Iris reticulata, Snowdrops, Chionodoxa, Winter Aconite, Squills, and of course Daffodils and Hyacinths.

There are also some shrubs that bloom even before Forsythia, and these include Witchhazels, Winter Jasmine, Camellia, Korean Rhododendron, Pieris, Winterhazel, and the fragrant Daphne odora and Viburnum ‘Dawn’.

There are even a few trees that may venture to bloom in March, although they may lose their flowers to a hard freeze or frost.  Look for the stunning pink ‘Okame’ Cherry, Magnolias, Red Maples and the Corneliancherry Dogwood.
