Topics of Interest: Preventing Deer Damage |
|
Deer have become an immense problem for many homeowners in parts of the Northeast, USA. Over the last decade we have developed some techniques that will help you to minimize deer damage. Deer tend to eat evergreens in the winter, and soft wooded deciduous shrubs as well as flowers in the spring, summer and fall. There are three main approaches to preventing deer damage: Exclusion, Coexistence, and Discouragement. The exclusion approach (recommended) is the only certain way to prevent deer damage, and is necessary when you have many deer in your yard. The presence of deer can lead to people and pets getting Lyme Disease from deer ticks. A partially invisible black mesh fence is installed to protect a portion of your yard, or your complete property. Deer fencing is attached to existing trees and to poles spaced 16 feet apart. Walkway gates can be installed for access, and driveway gates with or without remote control are also available.
Call Creative Landscapes today for an estimate to install deer fencing on your property. The coexistence approach accepts there will be some damage, and attempts to plant shrubs and flowers that the deer do not like to eat. A lot of study has been put into discovering shrubs and flowers that are deer resistant. Most herbs, very low plants, and plants with wooly, fibrous or succulent leaves are usually deer resistant. Creative Landscapes can design a landscape for you with plants that from our experience are not usually eaten by deer. The discouragement approach attempts to protect your most vulnerable shrubs with netting and repellent sprays, and your flowers with sprays. To protect your evergreens in the winter follow these three steps:
Protection of plants in the growing season is more difficult as repeated sprays are needed to protect new growth. Deer particularly like annual and perennial flowers as well as some soft-wooded shrubs at this time of year. Plants should be sprayed every two weeks in the spring and summer, on dry days, and after the sun is no longer on the plant (late afternoon or early morning is best). We can co-exist with Bambi, but take precautions before it's too late! Call Creative Landscapes today to discuss protecting your property from deer damage.
