Here is a check list of suggestions for your garden this month:

  1. Spray evergreens with 'Hinder' to protect from deer.  Over spray with 'Wilt-Proof' to prevent 'Hinder' from washing off.

  2. Cover small evergreens with deer mesh plastic netting.

  3. Check summer bulbs have not dried out in garage / basement.

  4. Use traction sand instead of salt to protect plants and walkways during ice/snow removal.

  5. Spray indoor plants with insecticidal soap regularly, and feed weekly with liquid fertilizer.

  6. Set up an appointment with a Landscape designer for spring plantings

  7. Have a professional inspect your large trees while the leaves are off.

  8. Knock heavy snow and ice off of your plants as soon as possible after a storm (use a broom!). Particular attention should be given to Yews, Japanese Hollies, Arborvitae, Leland Cypress and Dogwoods. 

  9. Use the winter months to put paths in your woods and clear away vines and wild roses.  Cover your woodland paths with woodchips.

  10. Sow vegetable and flower seeds indoors, follow instructions on the labels, and grow under lights in a cool location.

  11. Seeding of lawns can be done during this month if the ground is not too soggy.  Expect the grass to start coming up by early April.  

  12. Make cuttings from Forsythia and Cherry trees and bring indoors for early 'forcing' of blooms.  Place in warm water.
