Topics of Interest: Screening Plantings |
|
What do you see when you look out from your home, and when you are relaxing or entertaining in your yard? Is it time to improve your view? Screening plantings can improve your lifestyle by creating privacy for your leisure time. Unattractive views can be screened naturally to create a sense of being in nature. The sooner you plant screening plantings the sooner you will achieve the result you desire, as they often need time to fill in and grow to the required height. Screening can be achieved with a blend of different plants to create a natural look, or one plant can be repeated in a straight line to form a hedge, or staggered to provide a less formal effect. Evergreen hedges stay green in the winter but tend to be more expensive than deciduous plantings which, although they lose their leaves in the winter, may still be branched densely enough to do the job year round. Decide on the height of the screening you need before selecting your plantings, and then pick plants which are tough, grow quickly and are disease and insect resistant. Here are a few good plants to consider: TREES, Deciduous: Metasequoia, Lindens, Willows, Birches, Beeches, Kousa Dogwood and Hedge Maples. TREES, Evergreen: Pines, Spruces, False Cypress, Cryptomeria, 'Green Giant' Arborvitae, and Leland Cypress. SHRUBS, Deciduous: Privet, Bamboo, Burning Bush, Forsythia, Nandina, Viburnums and Photinia. SHRUBS, Evergreen: Arborvitae, Hollies, Yews, and Rhododendrons.
