Topics of Interest: Screening Plantings - Creating Privacy |
|
What do you see when you look out from your home? Screening plantings can improve your lifestyle by creating privacy for your leisure time and for entertaining in your garden, and unattractive views can be screened to create a sense of being in nature. Screening plants should be installed as soon as possible after purchasing a property as they may need time to fill in and grow to the required height. Screening can be achieved with a blend of different plants to create a natural look, or one plant can be repeated in a straight line to form a hedge, or staggered to provide a less formal effect. Evergreen hedges stay green in the winter but tend to be more expensive than deciduous plantings which, although they lose their leaves in the winter, may still be branched densely enough to do the job year round. Alternatives to screening plantings such as walls and fences (which can be covered with vines), should also be considered. Decide on the height of the screening you need before selecting your plantings and then pick plants which are tough, grow quickly and are disease and insect resistant. Here are a few good plants to consider: TREES, Deciduous: Metasequoia, Lindens, Willows, Birches, Beeches, Kousa Dogwood and Hedge Maples. TREES, Evergreen: Pines, Spruces, False Cypress, Cryptomeria, and Leland Cypress. SHRUBS, Deciduous: Privet, Bamboo, Burning Bush, Forsythia, Nandina, Viburnums and Photinia. SHRUBS, Evergreen: Arborvitae, Hollies, Yews, and Rhododendrons. A consultation with a professional landscape designer can be helpful in deciding the best screening plants for your property. |
