For spring color, we plant drifts of bulbs, spring flowering shrubs such as azaleas, lilacs, and viburnums, and a some choice flowering trees (dogwoods, cherries, apples).
For summer, perennials and summer flowering shrubs such as butterfly bush, spirea and hydrangeas provide lots of interest and color.
For the fall, we look to shrubs and trees with spectacular fall color, as well as plants with berries, and finally late blooming perennials such as asters and chrysanthemums.
In the winter, plants with interesting stems and barks such as red twig dogwood, coral stemmed maple, paper bark maple, birches and stewartias. This is also a great time to enjoy ornamental grasses, hollies and the beautiful structure of evergreens like firs, and spruces.
This can all be supplemented with a good structure of paths, a top notch lawn, a patio, benches, and a few choice garden ornaments. Add a water feature, rock garden, herb garden, ground covers and some screening plantings for privacy, and you can cancel that trip to Europe and enjoy your wonderful home all year round!
